What are TESA and PESE?
TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) and PESE relative techniques involve the surgical retrieval of sperm directly from the testicles or epididymis. These procedures are vital for men who have azoospermia (no sperm in the ejaculate).
When are these procedures necessary?
Surgical retrieval is recommended for men with blockages in the reproductive tract (obstructive azoospermia) or those with severe sperm production issues (non-obstructive azoospermia). It provides a way for men with these conditions to father biological children through ICSI.
The Procedure
These procedures are performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation and are minimally invasive. A small needle or tiny incision is used to collect tissue or fluid containing sperm. The retrieved sperm are then used immediately for fertilization or frozen for future use.
