What Is PESA?
Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) retrieves sperm from the epididymis, the coiled tube behind the testis where sperm mature and are stored. It is used primarily in cases of obstructive azoospermia, such as following a vasectomy or congenital absence of the vas deferens.
Who Are These Procedures For?
Both procedures are for men with azoospermia, where no sperm is present in the ejaculate. PESA is most effective when the blockage is in the epididymis. TESA is used when PESA does not yield sufficient sperm or when the issue is within the testis itself. Sperm retrieved through TESA or PESA is used directly with ICSI to fertilise eggs.
