ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)
A highly effective lab technique that injects a single sperm directly into an egg.
What Is ICSI?
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a specialised form of IVF that directly addresses male factor infertility and cases where fertilisation has previously been poor.
How ICSI Works
In ICSI, a single healthy sperm is selected under high magnification and injected directly into a mature egg. This bypasses the natural barriers to fertilisation and significantly improves the chances of successful fertilisation even when sperm quality is severely compromised.
Who Is ICSI Recommended For?
ICSI is used when the male partner has a very low sperm count, poor sperm motility, abnormal sperm morphology, or when sperm has been surgically retrieved through TESA or PESA. It is also recommended for couples who have had a previous IVF cycle with unexpectedly poor fertilisation rates, and for older patients or those with a limited number of eggs available.
How ICSI Differs from Conventional IVF
In standard IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish and fertilisation occurs naturally. In ICSI, fertilisation is achieved by direct injection. This makes ICSI significantly more effective in cases where sperm cannot penetrate the egg on its own.
