What Is Embryo Freezing?
After an IVF cycle, not all embryos created are transferred immediately. Healthy surplus embryos are frozen using a rapid vitrification process at an extremely low temperature. This halts all biological activity and preserves the embryo's developmental potential indefinitely.
Why Is Embryo Freezing Useful?
Frozen embryo transfer (FET) allows couples to attempt additional pregnancies without going through another stimulation cycle. It is also used when a fresh transfer is not advisable due to the risk of OHSS, when PGT results are awaited, or when the uterine lining is not optimal on the day of retrieval.
Are Frozen Embryos as Effective as Fresh?
Vitrified embryos have very high survival rates after thawing. Frozen embryo transfer success rates are comparable to, and in some protocols better than, fresh transfers. The endometrial preparation for a frozen cycle is also more controlled, which can be advantageous.
