Understanding the IVF Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

How IVF Works: Step-by-Step

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child. During IVF, mature eggs are retrieved from ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab. Then the fertilized egg (embryo) or eggs (embryos) are transferred to a uterus.

Step 1: Ovulation induction

Your doctor will monitor your ovaries and the timing of the egg release. The doctor will make sure that your ovaries are producing eggs, and that hormone levels are normal, among other things.

Step 2: Egg retrieval

During this step, eggs are collected from the follicles in your ovaries.

Step 3: Fertilization and embryo culture

The sperm is placed together with the best quality eggs to encourage fertilization. The eggs are monitored to confirm that fertilization and cell division are taking place.

Step 4: Embryo transfer

The embryos are transferred into the woman's uterus through a thin tube or catheter.
