Western Ghats Wildlife, Coffee Trails & Train Journey Experience

Private Taj Mahal Tour from Delhi

Karnataka by Rail – 2 Days of Train Travel + 7 Days of Sightseeing

Mumbai → Bengaluru → Chikmagalur → Nagarhole → Coorg → Bengaluru → Mumbai

Duration: 9 Days / 8 Nights (yes, two of those days you'll spend on a train, and honestly, that's half the fun.)
Tour Style: Wildlife, coffee estates, hill stations, a proper old-school rail journey, photography, and a bit of adventure thrown in.
 Starts: Mumbai
 Ends: Mumbai
Travel Mode: Overnight train plus a private AC vehicle for everything on the ground

Day 1: Mumbai to Bengaluru, Overnight on the Rails

It all starts at Mumbai CSMT or Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. You'll board a long-haul train heading south. Simple as that.

Pick from these:

  • Udyan Express
  • Chalukya Express
  • Lokmanya Tilak–SMVT Bengaluru Express

Travel time: Somewhere between 22 and 24 hours, give or take, depending on which train you land on.

Settle in. Watch the country change outside your window. Pune slides by, then Satara, Sangli, Belagavi, Hubballi, Davangere, Tumakuru, one after another, farmland stretching out in every direction. There's something almost meditative about it, isn't there? Night falls somewhere around Karnataka's border, and you sleep to the rhythm of the tracks.

Overnight: Train

Day 2: Still Rolling Towards Bengaluru

Wake up and you're still on the move. Coconut groves flash past. Sugarcane fields too. Small rivers, rocky little hills, villages waking up for the day. And if you're lucky with your window seat, you'll see a sunrise over Karnataka that's genuinely worth setting an alarm for.

Bengaluru shows up by late afternoon, sometimes early evening. Your driver will be waiting. Straight to the hotel, and honestly, take the evening slow. After two days on a train, you earn that much. This is really where the Western Ghats Tour Package begins to take shape, the city acting as the launchpad for everything hilly and green that follows.

Overnight: Bengaluru Day 3: Bengaluru First, Then Off to Chikmagalur (About 250 km, 5 Hours)

Breakfast, then out the door for a city tour that hits the essentials:

  • Lalbagh Botanical Garden
  • Cubbon Park
  • Bangalore Palace
  • Vidhana Soudha, just a photo stop from outside
  • ISKCON Temple
  • Bull Temple

Lunch, then the drive to Chikmagalur begins. The road climbs into the Western Ghats, and you can feel the air change as you go. By evening, you're checked into a coffee-plantation resort. Take a walk through the estate. If the season's right, there might be a bonfire waiting too.

Overnight: Chikmagalur

Day 4: Coffee, Hills, and Not Much Else (In the Best Way)

This is the day you slow right down.

  • Mullayanagiri Peak
  • Baba Budangiri Hills
  • Jhari Waterfalls
  • Hirekolale Lake
  • The Coffee Museum
  • A guided walk through the plantation

Want more? There are options.

Optional add-ons:

  • Jeep rides
  • Short treks
  • Birdwatching
  • A proper coffee tasting session

Watch the sunset melt behind the Ghats before calling it a night.

Overnight: Chikmagalur

Day 5: Into the Wild, Nagarhole National Park (About 180 km, 5 Hours)

Breakfast, then a drive through a forest that keeps getting thicker. Check into a wildlife resort. Lunch. Then it's straight into an evening jeep safari, and this is where things get exciting.

Keep your eyes peeled for:

  • Asian elephant
  • Tiger
  • Leopard
  • Gaur
  • Sambar deer
  • Wild dogs
  • Malabar giant squirrel
  • More bird species than you'll be able to name

Dinner back at the resort and stories to swap about what you saw.

Overnight: Nagarhole

Day 6: One More Safari, Then Coorg Calls (About 90 km, 2.5 Hours)

Not ready to leave the jungle yet? There's an optional early morning safari before breakfast. After that, it's on to Coorg, with stops at Nisargadhama and the Dubare Elephant Camp along the way. Few stretches capture the spirit of a Western Ghats Tour quite like this one, forest and hill country running almost unbroken from Nagarhole into Coorg.

Then, reach Madikeri by evening and head straight to Raja's Seat for sunset. It's a classic for a reason. Afterwards, wander the shops for coffee, homemade chocolates, cardamom, pepper, honey, the works.

Overnight: Coorg

Day 7: A Full Day Soaking Up Coorg

  • Abbey Falls
  • Talacauvery
  • Bhagamandala Temple
  • The Golden Temple at Bylakuppe
  • A coffee plantation visit
  • Madikeri Fort

Feeling adventurous?

Optional extras:

  • A plantation walk
  • River rafting, seasonal
  • Bird photography
  • Getting a taste of local Kodava culture firsthand

Overnight: Coorg

Day 8: Heading Back to Bengaluru (About 270 km, 6 Hours)

Breakfast, then the drive back begins, retracing that same beautiful stretch of the Western Ghats. If time allows, squeeze in a stop at Commercial Street, MG Road, or UB City. By evening, you're at the railway station, boarding your overnight train back to Mumbai.

Travel time: 22 to 24 hours, roughly

Overnight: Train

Day 9: Home to Mumbai

The train pulls in by morning, and just like that, it's over. But Karnataka's forests, its coffee estates, and that jeep safari, none of it fades quickly. You'll be talking about this trip for a while.

The tour concludes.
