Mumbai to Odisha Temple, Heritage & Nature Tour by Train

Private Taj Mahal Tour from Delhi

Jagannath Puri • Konark Sun Temple • Chilika Lake • Bhubaneswar

Duration: 6 Days / 5 Nights
Route: Mumbai → Bhubaneswar → Puri → Konark → Chilika Lake → Bhubaneswar → Mumbai

What This Trip Is About

Odisha doesn't get talked about enough, honestly. Six days here and you'll wonder why. This Odisha Tour Package from Mumbai by Train takes you from the ancient temple spires of Bhubaneswar to Puri's sacred shores, past the sun-soaked stone of Konark, and out onto Chilika Lake, where dolphins sometimes decide to show up. There's a rhythm to this trip that feels different from the usual hill station or beach holiday. It moves between faith, history and nature without ever rushing you through any one of them. Add in a comfortable train ride each way, some proper Odia food, and a fair bit of shopping for handicrafts, and you've got a trip that hits history, spirituality and nature all in one go.

Day 1: Mumbai to Bhubaneswar, Overnight Train

Board your train at Mumbai station and let the tracks do the work. There's something about an overnight journey that just puts you in the right headspace for a trip like this: no rushing, no traffic, just the slow unspooling of the country outside your window.

Trains worth checking:

  • Konark Express
  • Lokmanya Tilak Terminus–Bhubaneswar Superfast Express
  • Mumbai–Puri Express

Watch central India blur into eastern India as the hours pass, farmland giving way to forest and forest giving way to small towns you'll never remember the names of but will somehow remember the feeling of. Settle in, grab some sleep, and wake up somewhere entirely different.

Overnight: Train

Day 2: Bhubaneswar, the Temple City

You'll pull into Bhubaneswar station in the morning. Our representative will be waiting to get you to the hotel. Freshen up, grab a bite, and then step out into a city that's practically dripping with temples, some of them over a thousand years old and still very much alive with daily worship.

  • Lingaraj Temple, one of the finest examples of Kalinga architecture anywhere in the state
  • Mukteswara Temple, smaller but arguably more detailed in its carvings
  • Rajarani Temple, known for its warm sandstone hue and sculptural friezes
  • Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves, ancient rock-cut chambers linked to Jain monks from centuries past
  • Dhauli Shanti Stupa, standing at the site where Emperor Ashoka is said to have turned towards peace after the Kalinga war
  • Odisha State Museum: if you're up for it, a good stop for anyone curious about the region's manuscripts and tribal art
  • Ekamra Haat for some early shopping: textiles, silver filigree and terracotta pieces line the stalls here

Head back to the hotel once you've had your fill of stone carvings and centuries-old architecture, ready for a good night's rest.

Overnight: Bhubaneswar

Day 3: On to Puri

Breakfast first, then a drive to Puri, roughly 65 km down the road. Along the way, stop at Pipili, known for its bright appliqué craftwork, umbrellas and wall hangings stitched in colours you don't often see together but somehow work. Then Raghurajpur, a heritage village where pattachitra painting has been passed down for generations, has artists working right outside their homes if you catch them at the right hour.

Once you're in Puri:

  • Jagannath Temple: non-Hindu visitors can view it from outside the premises, and even from there the scale of it is something
  • Gundicha Temple, considered the deity's summer residence during the annual Rath Yatra
  • Loknath Temple
  • Narendra Tank
  • Golden Beach, perfect for slowing down for a bit, the sand stretching wide and the sea doing what it does

Spend the evening walking along Puri Beach as the sun goes down, fishing boats coming in, and the smell of fried snacks drifting from the stalls nearby. Hard to beat that.

Overnight: Puri

Day 4: Konark, Chandrabhaga, Ramachandi

A full day on the coast today, and it's a good one.

  • Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that genuinely lives up to the hype, built in the shape of a colossal stone chariot with wheels so detailed they double as sundials
  • Konark Museum, worth a quick stop for context on how the temple was built and later restored
  • Chandrabhaga Beach, quieter than Puri's main stretch and a good spot for sunrise if you're an early riser
  • Ramachandi Temple, tucked near the river mouth with a peaceful, almost forgotten feel to it
  • Marine Drive, the coastal road connecting Puri and Konark, worth the drive for the views alone
  • Sand Art Gallery, optional but worth a look if you're curious about Odisha's sand sculpting tradition

Back to Puri by evening. If you're up for trying the local seafood or classic Odia thali, this is the night to do it. The flavours here lean on mustard, panch phoron, and fresh catch in a way that's distinct from anywhere else in the country.

Overnight: Puri

Day 5: Satapada and Chilika Lake, then Bhubaneswar

Breakfast, then head out to Satapada on the edge of Chilika Lake, Asia's largest brackish water lagoon and genuinely one of those places photos don't quite capture, the water stretching out further than feels possible.

  • An optional boat cruise on the lake, gliding past small fishing villages and sandbanks
  • A chance to spot Irrawaddy dolphins, weather permitting, their rounded heads breaking the surface just long enough for a photo if you're quick
  • A visit to the sea mouth, where the lake meets the Bay of Bengal
  • Birdwatching, especially good between November and February when migratory flocks arrive in huge numbers
  • Plenty of photo opportunities throughout, as this stretch rarely disappoints.

Drive back to Bhubaneswar afterwards, with some free time for last-minute shopping.

Overnight: Bhubaneswar

Day 6: Bhubaneswar to Mumbai

Last morning here. Breakfast, check out, and depending on how your train timing works out, squeeze in a visit or two before heading to the station.

Nandankanan Zoological Park, optional, known for its white tigers and botanical gardens

ISKCON Temple

Local handicraft markets for anything you missed on day two

Transfer to Bhubaneswar station and board your train back to Mumbai. Few trips balance temples, coastline and wildlife the way a proper Odisha Heritage Tour does, and Odisha has a way of staying with you, temples and dolphins and all, long after the train pulls back into home territory.

The tour concludes.
